The Hurtigruten voyage rightly earns its place in the hall of fame of iconic traveller routes along with other classics like the Orient Express, Europe’s Danube, and the revered Route 66. Visit cities like Bergen, Ålesund and Trondheim, before we cross the Arctic Circle and sail into the Arctic. Southbound you get to see Lofoten and Trollfjorden in broad daylight, before we sail along the Helgeland coast, passing the Seven Sisters mountains. Let yourself admire the overwhelmingly beautiful west coast on our way to our final destination, Bergen.

B ergen itself was yet more of a revelation, a captivating place for an easily accessible, yet off-the-beaten track weekend, altogether prettier than Oslo and less expensive too. Its chief attractions are, famously, access to the fjords by which it is surrounded, along with a string of seven mountains (hills, really, though rugged, forested ones) and the infinitely photogenic Unesco-protected harbour area Bryggen, a wharf of tall gable-fronted wooden houses, tenements (now filled with artists’ studios) and alleys, dating back to its medieval glory days as a member of the Hanseatic League, though rebuilt at the beginning of the 18th century.

The Hurtigruten sets sail from Bergen harbour in the evening, heading for the Arctic. As we sail along the coast, a wealth of experiences await – the Jugend town of Ålesund and a summer detour into one of the world’s most beautiful fjords, Geirangerfjord. We continue north to the medieval town of Trondheim, where the Nidaros Cathedral is a hightlight for many. Experience the exitement as we cross the Polar Circle and visit Tromsø, before we continue even further north and arrive Kirkenes. This city is right on the Russian border. Vi are acctually as far east as St. Petersburg.
